National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India was established on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, as amended by the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019. It is India's apex statutory institution for the promotion and protection of human rights and works to safeguard the rights relating to life, liberty, equality, and dignity guaranteed under the Constitution of India and recognized under international human rights conventions enforceable in India. The NHRC functions in accordance with the Paris Principles, the internationally accepted standards for National Human Rights Institutions.

The NHRC investigates allegations of human rights violations, reviews constitutional and legal safeguards, promotes human rights awareness, encourages research, visits prisons and detention facilities, and recommends measures to strengthen the protection of fundamental rights across India.
